Benthic foraminifera from the deep-water Niger delta (gulf of Guinea): Assessing present-day and past activity of hydrate pockmarks ArchiMer
Fontanier, Christophe; Koho, K. A.; Goni-urriza, M. S.; Deflandre, Bruno; Galaup, S.; Ivanovsky, A.; Gayet, Nicolas; Dennielou, Bernard; Gremare, Antoine; Bichon, S.; Gassie, C.; Anschutz, P.; Duran, R.; Reichart, G. J..
We present ecological and isotopic (δ18O and δ13C) data on benthic foraminifera sampled from 4 deep-sea stations in a pockmark field from the deep-water Niger delta (Gulf of Guinea, Equatorial Atlantic Ocean). In addition, a series of sedimentological and (bio)geochemical data are shown to back up foraminiferal observations. All stations are located within 1.2 km of each other, so prevailing oceanographic conditions can be assumed to be similar at each site. Two of the sites (GMMC-01 and GMMC-02) are located in a pockmark (named “pockmark A”) where current methane seepages were recorded by ROV observations. A third station (GMMC-03) is located in the topographic depression interpreted as a collapsed pockmark (named “pockmark B”). The fourth site (GMMC-04)...

Detection of free gas and gas hydrate based on 3D seismic data and cone penetration testing: An example from the Nigerian Continental Slope ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Voisset, Michel; Marsset, Tania; Vernant, Antoine-mathieu; Cauquil, E; Colliat, J; Curinier, V.
We present a new method to characterize free gas, gas hydrates and carbonate concretions occurrence which are considered as high-risk factors for sub-sea developments in the Niger delta. This method is based on the combination of 3D seismic data to the geotechnical site characterizations using piezocone CPTU tests (Cone Penetration Test with additional measurement of the pore water pressure). A special processing of the 3D seismic data has enabled the determination of the interval compressional velocity. Using the effective-medium theory, velocity anomalies (negative and positive) within the first 15 m were translated in gas hydrate and free gas distribution. The calibration of the P wave velocity anomalies was done thanks to in-situ geotechnical testing...

Types of fluid-related features controlled by sedimentary cycles and fault network in deepwater Nigeria ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Ruffine, Livio; Ker, Stephan; Cauquil, E.; Gay, Aurelien.
The seismic characteristics of focused fluid-related features such as pockmarks and carbonate build-ups on the Nigerian continental slope have been investigated using complementary seismic data sets (reprocessed 3D exploration data and 2D Very High Resolution hull-mounted and near-bottom seismic data) coupled with the results of previous studies (sedimentological, geotechnical and geochemical analyses). The results show different types of fluid-related features within the hemipelagic phase of long duration (∼1 Myr) Turbidite/Hemipelagic cycles. They are the product of the disturbance of the hosting sediments following two main distinct processes: (1) no or low sediment deposition caused by fluid escape associated with seafloor settlement (benthic fauna,...

U-Th isotope constraints on gas hydrate and pockmark dynamics at the Niger delta margin ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Henderson, Gideon M.; Etoubleau, Joel; Caprais, Jean-claude; Ruffine, Livio; Marsset, Tania; Dennielou, Bernard; Cauquil, Eric; Voisset, Michel; Sultan, Nabil.
The application of uranium-thorium dating methods to authigenic carbonates provides unique constraints on the temporal evolution of methane seeps at ocean margins. In this study, we report U-Th isotope measurements for carbonate breccias collected from within a hydrate-bearing pockmark located at the Niger Delta margin. These concretions were extracted from a carbonate-rich layer in the upper two meters of a sediment core (N2-KS-44; ~ 1200 m water depth), well above the present-day sulphate-methane transition zone (about 3 m depth) and the presence of gas hydrates in the sediment. The stratigraphy of core N2-KS-44 was established by tuning its downcore Al/Ti profile to a well-dated nearby reference core, and carbonate 230Th/U ages were calculated using...
